What is Spiritualism?

Spiritualism means many things to many people to some it is a philosophy, to some a religion, to some the science behind Mediumship and evidence of life after death along with the natural laws of cause and effect, to some it is the lifelong study and attainment of spiritual wisdom.

Whatever Spiritualism may come to mean or be defined as by any individual, it is fundamentally a journey of unfolding one’s own spirituality with the aim of bringing about a transformation of the individual’s spiritual qualities, morals and ethics for the betterment of self and to the benefit of all in this life.

What the Spiritualists’ National Union (SNU) provides through its’ churches/centres, literature and education are opportunities for anyone to begin their investigation and study of Spiritualism and to consider its implications in all matters of the spirit here and now as well as the hereafter.

In the United Kingdom the SNU is a registered religious body for Spiritualism. The SNU adopts a set of Seven Principles that form the basis for a study of spirituality through a philosophy, which its members and churches/centres support and promote. SNU Churches/Centres offer services which include Mediumship to provide evidence of the existence of the Spirit within us all and the continuation of every individual soul beyond physical death, irrespective of nature or belief.

The Seven Principles of Spiritualism ...

The religious philosophy of Spiritualism is based upon seven Principles.  We like to think that our Principles are not binding rules and that they simply give sound guidance on how to live a spiritual life.  They also provide a sound foundation for building upon your own personal philosophy.

Our Seven Principles are:

  1. The Fatherhood of God.
The core belief of the religious philosophy of Spiritualism is that  God exists within and around everything. We are all children of God and each one of us are part of one family.

  2. The Brotherhood of Man.
We are all part of one family in God and true brotherhood can bring equality, security and peace for everyone, regardless of race, colour or creed.

  3. The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels.
Communion within God's divine energy is a natural and essential part of our existence. The Ministry of Angels brings enhanced wisdom to enlighten the individual and the world in which we live. This includes those who are dedicated to the welfare and service of mankind bringing inspiration guidance and healing.

  4. The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul.
Our spirit is part of the ‘Creative Force’ of God and after  physical death the physical body is left behind whilst the soul continues to exist in a different dimension.

  5. Personal Responsibility.
We have the ability to make decisions throughout our lives as we see fit. What each of us makes of our life is our Personal Responsibility. No other person or influence can put right our own wrong doings.

  6. Compensation and Retribution Hereafter for all the Good and Evil Deeds done on Earth.

This Principle expresses the natural law of ‘cause and effect’. The cause of everything we do in this life is carried forward and has it's effect in the next life.

  7. Eternal Progress open to every Human Soul.
Eternity does not begin at death; we are living in eternity right now! Any action, or intent to change, to promote soul growth and progression, creates a positive reaction. There will always be the opportunity to develop and move forward, no one is ever deprived of the all embracing love of God.
